One of the additions that come with Greymoor expansion of The Elder Scrolls Online is the Antiquity System. The new system lets you travel across Tamriel in search of lost artifacts. In this guide, I will walk you through everything you need to know about how to become the best Archaeologist Tamriel has ever known.

Through the use of two new Skill Lines and the new Antiquarian’s Eye Tool, you’ll be able to uncover new furnishings, mythic items, new motifs, a mount, and a lot more!

How To Get Started

To get started, the first thing that you need to do is to head over to the Antiquarian Circle. You should be able to find in the city of Solitude in Western Skyrim. Once you are there, you will need to speak with Verita Numida. At this point, you will obtain the required skills and the Antiquarian’s Eye.

You now have everything you need to get started uncovering lost relics across Tamriel. As an optional step, you can accept the next quest from Verita called “The Antiquarian’s Art” which tells you to speak to Gabrielle Benele who is located downstairs within the same building.

Once you’ve got the requisite skill lines you can begin finding antiquities. The first step is to open the Antiquities tab of the Quest Journal (default key “J”) and go to the Scryable section. This will list all the scryable leads you have for the zone you are currently in. At the start you will only be able to scry green-quality leads, but as you level the skill-line and unlock new traits you’ll be able to move up the chain. The difficulties and the what levels they unlock at are:

  • Green = Simple Difficulty (Level 1)
  • Blue = Intermediate Difficulty (Level 3)
  • Purple = Advanced Difficulty (Level 5)
  • Gold = Master Difficulty (Level 7)
  • Orange = Ultimate Difficulty (Level 10)

Scrying basics.

Artaeum

You use Scrying to locate antiquities based on the Leads you have on hand. Leads can be found damn near everywhere – from world bosses, chests, public dungeons, delves, and within digsites of other antiquities – and these can all be viewed from your journal. Once you unlock the activity and the Scrying skill-line you should notice a new Antiquities tab at the top of your journal, now the second option available after quests.

How To Get To Artaeum

Within this tab you’ll notice a section titled “Scryable”, followed by zone names below. The Scryable section is where you’ll find a list of all the Leads you have on hand that you can scry within the zone you are currently in. The sections for the zones below highlight what leads you have on hand for that particular zone, but you’ll need to head there first if you wish to dig up those Leads.

From the Scryable Section select the Lead you wish to unearth. At the start this will be the free green-quality Leads: these are the easiest Leads to scry, and are not locked behind your Scrying skill-line level. Once you are ready to hunt down a lead tap the Scry hotkey as displayed in the bottom-right of the screen to bring up the Scrying mini-game.

You’ll notice a whole bunch of grids (“facets”) covered in different icons and six glowing points. You’ll start from the central grid at the very bottom of the board (above your turn indicator), and the goal is to connect to all of the glowing points. If you miss a few you won’t fail the scry, but you will have to bumble about more digsites before finding the actual item. Connect them all and you will have only one digsite to deal with.

The trick is to click on grids connected to other grids with a matching icon. This will activate all of the matching icons adjacent to one another, and the goal is to connect to as many of the glowing points as possible before you run out of moves. This is pretty simple to do with green-quality leads, but as you climb the ladder netting all six glowing points will become more of a challenge. Thankfully, there are skills you can unlock as you level Scrying that make the task easier to accomplish.

First is the Coalescence skill: this will unite a hexagonal cluster of grids, turning all the grids within into the same icon as the central grid. The Dilation skill will claim all icons of the selected type that touch your area of control, in addition to any matching icons that are adjacent. Farsight will will allow you to claim a line of icons stretching out from your area of control.

Excavation basics

Before you get started be sure to assign the Antiquarian’s Eye to a quickslot. This will make locating your digsites easier once you reach the area you uncovered via Scrying. Just go to your inventory, select the Quickslots tab, and assign the Antiquarian’s Eye to an open slot. Once that’s out of the way head out to your digsite, which will be highlighted in blue on the map and have an Antiquities icon on the compass.

How To Get Artaeum Takeaway Broth

Once there the compass will turn blue, and activating the Antiquarian’s Eye will generate a glowing orb that will point towards the actual digsite with a glowing tail. The direction the tail is flowing toward is the direction you need to go, so orient yourself to the tail and press forward. You are looking for a mound of dirt that is spouting off blue energy and sparkles gold.

At the digsite interact with it to bring up the Excavation mini-game. It’s a giant 10×10 grid full of dirt, and each grid will be one of three levels of depth. Your treasure is hidden by this dirt, and you’ll need to use the Antiquarian’s Eye and your available tools to unearth it. You’ll begin with the Antiquarian’s Eye (or “Augur” skill as it’s known in this mini-game): it’s a “Hot and Cold” mini-game to locate the exact position of the item.

Selecting a grid with the eye will bring up a color, which represents how close you are to the treasure. Red means you are 5+ grids away from it, Orange means you are within 4 grids of it, Yellow means you are within 2, and Green means you are right on the money. The crystal next to the Eye indicates how many charges you have before you can no longer use the eye, so if you don’t find a Green grid before running out you will want to dig around the Yellow grids. The best way to “Augur” is to start with the four corners of the site and then the center – this will not only help you hone in on the loot, but identify which quadrants are best ignored.

Once you have either located a Green grid or have run out of charges for the Antiquarian’s Eye it’s time to start digging. In the beginning you will start off with only a Hand Brush, which removes one layer of dirt per use. Every use of a tool other than the Antiquarian’s Eye will consume your “Time2 resource, or the light-yellow bar at the top of the screen. Run out of time before finding your treasure and you will fail the dig. Don’t stress too hard over this: you can find the digsite again without having to scry the Lead.

So, let’s explain your tools real quick:

  • Hand Brush – removes one layer of dirt from a single grid per use, but generates Intuition (charges for your other tools).
  • Trowel – remove up to three layers of dirt from a single grid.
  • Heavy Shovel – remove a single layer of dirt from multiple grids in a large area; only affects the highest layer of dirt.

You need to level up your Excavation skill-line to access the other tools (though the Trowel is grabbed early on at level 2), so at the start you will want to zone in on those Green grids and use the Hand Brush to push away the dirt covering the antiquity. The Trowel can used for this purpose as well, but will damage the antiquity if you use it on dirt that is less than three layers deep (the thick, rocky grids are three layers deep, moderately rocky two, and no rocks are one). The Trowel won’t destroy the treasure outright if you do this, but keep an eye on the red health bar below your Time gauge.

Once you unlock the shovel you want to use it in tandem with the Hand Brush to clear as many grids as possible. Because the Heavy Shovel only knocks down the highest level of dirt within its area of effect, use the Hand Brush to equalize as many layers as you can before using it. Remember to be mindful of your Time!

As you take on more difficult Leads you’ll start to notice purple gas clouds in your digs: these are underground gas veins that can be used to your advantage, but can also lead to failure if not triggered correctly. Essentially, gas veins can blow up, and if they are above the antiquity this will destroy it outright. However, if they are near it these can be chained together with the Trowel and detonated to clear mass quantities of dirt from the board (making bonus loot all the easier to locate). If you see purple grids be mindful of their location and the antiquity’s.

Now that you are done with most of the process, lets talk about finding leads:

FINDING LEADS

Finding leads for an Antiquity is arguably the most important step in the Antiquity System. Leaders in ESO Greymoor can be found in a few different ways throughout Tamriel. Once a lead is discovered, you will have 30 days to use it before it expires and you will need to rediscover it.

Some of the ways which you can find leads includes the following:

  1. Exploration
  2. Defeating enemies
  3. Speaking with NPCs
  4. Examining treasures
  5. Completing quests
  6. Finding random Antiquities

It is also important to note that leads have varying difficulty levels. These range from “Green” which are fairly simple to “Orange” which are the toughest and include Mythic Items.

How To Get To Artaeum Eso

After successfully finding a lead, you will need to Scry for it. This can be done either from the Journal or from the Map as long as you are in the zone where the Antiquity is located. From that point forth, all it remains is to excavate the Antiquity and learn the lore associated with it.

Mythic Item Leads

You will need to be LEVEL 7 or else you won’t be able to drop gold leads! Bellow you will find the locations of all the different pieces that needs to be obtained to create an item.

Hereis a list with all lead locations.

Antiquities can be quickly leveled in Artaeum

If you own the Summerset Chapter (or have ESO+) you can use the tiny island of Artaeum to powerlevel your Antiquities skill-lines. If you do not you’ll want to find a similarly small zone, such as Khenarthi’s Roost or the other starter zones from the base game. They won’t be as efficient as Artaeum (seriously, the island is tiny compared to other ESO zones), but they’ll be faster to traverse than the larger zones.

Before we start, let’s break down the amount of experience required per level, and how much experience you will earn per completed Lead:

  • Level 1-2: 8 EXP
  • Level 2-3: 12 EXP
  • Level 3-4: 30 EXP
  • Level 4-5: 40 EXP
  • Level 5-6: 60 EXP
  • Level 6-7: 85 EXP
  • Level 7-8: 115 EXP
  • Level 8-9: 150 EXP
  • Level 9-10 200 EXP

And each Lead grants:

  • Green – 1 EXP
  • Blue – 3 EXP
  • Purple – 5 EXP
  • Gold – 10 EXP
  • Red – 10 EXP

Once in Artaeum (or your starter zone of choice) start scrying the basic green-level Lead for the zone in your journal. Every zone has a stock green-level Lead, and it can be farmed endlessly. You need to hit level three to take on blue Leads, so the smaller zones make it easier to chain excavations back-to-back. Once you reach level 3 you will start to earn blue quality Leads from your green-level digs, and these will be for the same zone.

Once you can tackle blue quality Leads start farming those by finishing a green-level Lead, then the blue quality one. Blue quality Leads disappear after you excavate them, thus the need to farm another green-level Lead to obtain a new one. Keep at this until you hit level 5 and can unlock purple quality Leads.

Now we get to the fun part. Purple quality Leads are like blue Leads: they will disappear after you acquire the goods. Unlike blue quality Leads you only get one purple Lead for the same zone from digging, so you will need to rotate across ALL of Tamriel to grab new Purple leads. You’re gonna farm a green-level Lead, then the blue, followed by the purple, and move on to a new zone. Once you reach level 7 you can dig up gold quality Leads.

Gold quality Leads are found out in the world: in treasure chests, on world bosses, in Psijic Rifts, within Public Dungeons, or off of random monsters. The catch: you need to be level 7 in Scrying with the appropriate trait unlocked for these to start dropping. Yep, it’s exploration time. Go out into the world and start exploring as you normally would, and feel free to plunder delves and dungeons you may have already completed. Once you have stockpiled 30+ gold Leads start uncovering them to reach level 10.

Once you hit level 10 you are done with leveling, and can now dig up red “Ultimate” Leads. These contain some of the rarest treasures in game, though the new Mythic items are gold Leads – meaning you don’t necessarily need to hit level 10 if you don’t care about much else. Other than that, there you go: this is the most efficient way to level your Antiquities skill-lines. You can also do it at your own pace as you naturally explore Tamriel, but if you want to power-level these skill-lines you will need to dedicate a day to the task. Have fun digging!

To reach this skyshard, you need to progress with the first Summerset main quest, The Queen’s Decree. At one point in this quest, you’ll be able to reach the Artaeum map and its solo dungeon, called Traitor’s Vault.

If you’ve already completed the quest, you’ll need to get back to the Keep of the Eleven Forces, located just south from Shimmerene. This is where the portal to Artaeum is now unlocked. Go through it and head left – west shortly after. You’ll soon reach a part of the compound where a blue light illuminates the entrance to the Traitor’s Vault. Go through it.

Based on the quantity of moldering ruins on Artaeum, once there must have been many more Monks of the Psijic Order than are present today. This hall looks to have been abandoned more recently than most.

In the delve, follow the path to your right at all times. This path will take you to the top floor, and the ruined part of the pathway, where a Bone Colossus defends the Skyshard that is looming over the center of the Traitor’s Vault.
